Um, no. The Panama ... ( 3 months ago by amphelice)
Um, no. The Panama Canal was conceived and concluded more for trade reasons than for any "common good". US politics at that time were very much isolationist and depended strongly on both the Monroe doctrine and on gaining financial and political advantage in the Western Hemisphere. To say that there has never been a "just us/America" attitude inherent in US politics is not only false, but also a bit naive. No offense meant, but rare few countries act out of anything else except self-interest.
You can plead ... ( 3 months ago by macindrew)
You can plead ignorance all you want, but the facts are it was to open the americas to free trade.
the US has only acted in the selfless interest of others through their entire history, and for you to make the mistaken notion that it was in self interest is to plead ignorance upon the entire american experience.
learn your world history! before you post again! thanks.
There's a ... ( 3 months ago by amphelice)
There's a difference between a personal experience of a country's history and an analytical look at the cause and effect of that history. Just because I disagree with your perspective on US history does not mean that I am ignorant. It only means that we have different perspectives on it.
As for learning my world history... Really, you couldn't come up with any other retort? It's kind of sad, because I was hoping for an actual discussion, not for the typical "you're wrong, go away" situation.

Become educated about world timelines is all I'm asking you to do...
Never present "bias"... only facts like I do... It really helps get to the honest heart of a discussion.
Thanks!

Right. Let's just agree to disagree on this, because just like you, I am presenting facts, but from a different perspective. If we discuss this from a rhetorical perspective on history, then yes, you are correct. However, if we discuss this from an economic and political perspective, then there's a validity to what I said.
As for learning timelines, please don't make assumptions about my education based on a short discussion. That is not exactly conducive to a conversation.

great, just learn to LEAVE the dogma out of any argument.
--- thin slice in middle america for ships to pass through, better for people worldwide. everyone agrees.
just simple facts win every "political" debate.
Just out of ... ( 3 months ago by amphelice)
Just out of curiousity, isn't stating that something is better for everyone all around just another type of dogma? Generalisations like that are very useful rhetoric tools, but rarely tell the whole truth. It's easy to justify something by stating that it is for greater good, but what lies behind that rhetoric? I'm not talking about the Panama Canal anymore, but on a more general level.

I like Craig Ferguson, but this is gutless. He goes to the White House Correspondents' Dinner and eviscerates the NY Times and the Clintons while leaving Bush and Cheney mostly unscathed. Shame on him. He might as well tell the one about the three Canadian hunters.

Everyone goes after Bush. It's become passe and predictable. Craig knew he'd never be as scathing as Colbert, and Colbert managed to Kill and Bomb at the same time. Colbert's address was more for his own entertainment, Ferguson managed to walk the line and got a standing ovation. Bush is an idiot, but tell us something we don't already know?
