actually, series 4 of a bit of fry & laurie began airing in february of 1995. this was the same month that stephen walked out of cell mates & attempted suicide.
i guess i wouldn't be surprised if he'd had the idea in the back of his head a few months prior to the cell mates incident - during filming of this series - & writing this was a coping strategy or a cry for help, consciously or no.

I donno. I don't think that manic depressives can predict whats going to make them snap. Besides when episodes air and when they're filmed and written... they can be years apart.

i wish i could find a filming schedule for the show so we could know for sure. at any rate, i wasn't suggesting that he knew ahead of time that cell mates was going to make him snap, but he had attempted suicide before and maybe that particular method was something he'd thought about, however briefly. i do doubt he knew about the show when this was filmed.

What u have to appreciate here is Stephen's comic mannerisms. Take his taxi driver character, he doesn't actually tell a joke but the way he rounds his venom off with ' I didnt actually say that, but I should have (wink) I should have! A beautiful moment. I like the way the next clip with lawrie is so swift and sweet too

It's a real shame some people don't either like or quite understand their humour. And most have never seen it outside of Britain. But Hugh and Stephen both, such good actors. I just hope with House being such a success more people will find these clips and be amused as I was and am still.
A quote to the end: "Who told you you were naked?" Surreal. It was Stephen who said that one. Verbal genius.
