Sergei Rachmaninov plays his piano concerto No 2

Uploaded by: kspm01
Video Description:
Rachmaninov was of course the brilliant virtuoso we all know, but as a genious composer he has as well his place in the standard classical repertoire. Here we hear him play the adagio sostenuto from his second piano concerto. This unique recording with the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra directed by Leopold Stokowski was made for RCA in 1929.

I'm 16 years old, and I love his music. It's true that a lot of young people listen to other genres, but classical music has never really been a mass culture thing. You have to learn to like it, it isn't as "easy-listening" as other genres.

I would actually disagree! I'm also 16 but classical music is very easy listening XD. As you said however, and you were completely spot on, it's a cultural problem.
My love for classical music started just over a year ago upon hearing Chopin's Fantaisie Impromptu, and that just kicked it off.

I agree with elevenwhy. I'm a guitarist, and I never felt more at home playing anything but my classical guitar. There's a tranquility and such a challenge in making sure voices stay cantabile and legato. I think classical guitar is a genre like everything else; you sorta get influenced in one way or another.

Schubert's Op. 90, No. 3. Take a listen to it.
Look up "Brendel" and "Schubert".
You can also watch Horowitz's and Zimerman's, and whoever else's. My personal favorite is Brendel's though.
Just thought I'd reccomend it.

No, a turntable tuning problem because it's when a new 78rpm side starts. At the time recording speed wasn't always very precise.

It is wonderful to read of all of the teenagers on here that appreciate this music. I am encouraged that the younger generation is still developing an ear for classical music and art. I believe that the only thing that keeps us from being a totally savage race is the healing power of art and music. Kasper, you are so right: everyone should be made to listen to Rach once in awhile :)

Rachmaninov is amazing, his huge chords. They are so beautiful. I'm 17 and he is half the reason what inspired me to just start learning piano although only being able to span an octave i might some trouble with his music XD

My favorite piano concerto from my favorite composer. It's my favorite piece of music. (but is it a sin if I like Krystian Zimerman's interpretation better?)
Rach takes it a bit faster than I would if I was playing, but I'll grant him that since he composed it. (Unlike Berezovsky, who simply goes way too fast)
Thank you for posting this!

this is my first time hearing a Rachmaninov piece and now i know why he is considered the most difficult composer to play!
i'd love to hear him play the piano by himself, though the pairing with the orchestra isn't bad at all.

hi Ancalagon: don't u think that whoever did the digital remastering (if that's what it is) was fascinated with Rach's right hand? Rach was a master of counterpoint; it was inherent to his craft, unlike the forays into polyphony by others since Mozart, Hindemith included. what do u think?
