Richard Dawkins on the strangeness of science: TEDTalks

Uploaded by: TEDtalksDirector
Video Description:
http://www.ted.com Mind-expanding talk that probes the limits of human understanding: Why can't we see atoms? Why can't we hear color? How can we understand randomness? Dawkins suggests that the true nature of the universe eludes us because the human mind has evolved mainly to understand other humans -- and to look for human motives even in natural processes. Thus, we create a humanlike God to explain phenomena we can't otherwise comprehend; right or wrong, we're simply wired for it. Dawkins is Oxford's Professor for the Public Understanding of Science, and the author of the landmark 1976 book The Selfish Gene and the 2006 bestseller The God Delusion. (Recorded July 2005 in Oxford, UK)

First he never ... ( 2 weeks ago by icognito01)
First he never affirmed 100%, just that it was highly unlikely. And saying something is highly improbable is more realistic than saying something is 100% real. Hey, a flying spaghetti monster exist 100%, do you have proof that it doesn't?

Err, no. There is ... ( 2 weeks ago by hackenbollox)
Err, no. There is simply no need for god in our current model. No good scientist would ever discount the possibility completely, because that would be bad science. However; it is clear from the model we have that any being with complexity enough to design a universe could only come into being through a process of evolution by natural selection. That would make a mockery of the whole concept of a deity. Ergo: there almost certainly is no god.

The Ted Talks are fantastic, Dawkins is a brilliant man. Yet, this is the most diluted meaningless ramblings of all the Ted talks. Occaisional good qoutes only. Perhaps he pleasures himself with his rambling mind as much as his other body parts as he mentioned.
This guy worships himself. :(
Check out the other Ted Talks/ Great stuff

There are alot of great TED-talks for sure. This is one of them. The idea of Middle World, for example, is brilliant. Try to listen to this talk without prejudice and see if you can fathom Dawkins' genius.

Dawkins is ... ( 2 days ago by skmenon23)
Dawkins is articulate. But I wonder.. If all beliefs r all reduce-able to a few chemicals passing through the neural synapses, and all memory or the mind is a sum of certain stored proteins in the amygladys and hippocampus in the brain, then isn't atheism also thoughts and therefore chemicals that can be changed somehow, say by an electric shock;then what is the guarantee that Dawkins will not deny all this atheism one day and becomes a believer, like many other darwinians have done in the past?

Well what I like ... ( 2 days ago by Kovaji)
Well what I like about Dawkins is that he is always willing to admit the limits of his, and all knowledge. For example when asked in an interview with Bill Maher if there was a chance that god does exist, he admitted that while he is fairly sure he does not, he is not certain, nor can he be. So yes, it's possible, though unlikely.

Vilxan:
It is true.
I dare say he is a modern legend. He brings "new" ideas, and implores us to toss out the medieval shackles of religion. Mind you I'm not one of his followers (yet). Heck, I don't even have his books.
He fights on the behalf of Science and Atheists, why wouldn't he have groupies? He's the intelligent, rational man's rockstar.
Array ( 1 day ago by drakionx)
Skmenon23:
So you're saying that you hope his fear of death overwhelms his rational thought process and engulfs him?
Some have had this happen, yes, or something similar.
But I ask you, why do believers become Atheists? Maybe they just stopped pretending? I for one hate lies, and to lie to myself is beyond comprehension.
Irreducible ... ( 1 hour ago by whatwasjimthinking)
Irreducible complexity is not a hypothesis, because it is not science. If you can't test it, it isn't science. Science seeks to understand how something works, and by just stamping 'god did it' on things we learn nothing. All I.D. does is replace a question mark with another question mark. We all know the goal of I.D. is to try and undermine science and shoe-horn god into schools. Funny that the 'designer" could be Zeus or Odin, or even an alien too. I.D was disproved in court as not science.
