Its about the 1939 Russian invasion of Poland. WWII didn't really get going until 1942 when Germany attacked the British. Years ago I seen an interview with her and the band on MTV or "Behind the Music" (something like that) and she actually had past family members who were killed in that invasion.
So this is why she wrote the song. Now as for the Capt Kirk part or Superheroes maybe that is the way she views the war? I don't know and there are some parts that sound fictional but for the most part the message is there. I looked for that interview on YouTube but cant find it.
I was living in California at the time so it was back in the mid 80's when I watched the interview. Anyway that has always been something that stuck in my head. And anyway she says everyone is a Captain Kirk, well she probably just means the pilots. The Russians did invade with aircraft. In fact I believe they bombed the heck out of Poland from the air so it makes sense and in the vid you can see the bombs dropping (fireball etc).
The real truth of it is Nazi Germany and Russia attack them at just about the same time. I believe the Germans got there first but soon after the Russians showed up. You think its bad today, there was a lot of crazy shit going on back then. A WORLD war! up until 1945.
Now I know the Russians had the I-16 Polikarpov which were way fast I believe the fastest in the sky at the time. The Germans were using the Rf 100 Stukas which were also very fast and had a pretty heavy bomb payload. Now at the end of the song she says "Now here's a Red Balloon I think of you and let it go"... maybe she is thinking of the person or persons in her family that were lost. Its rock and roll and not always clear, hell Ozzy Osbourne can contest to that lol.
My replies were being questioned three or four times so I figured I would give the whole story to clear things up. Now you can go up to your browser and go to another fucken video. You don't want to be insulted then don't insult people yourself. It is called mutual respect. If you want to talk to someone like that then I would suggest calling the Royal Palace and give that old windbag Elizabeth an ear full. If you dont like Americans then stay off American based sites like Youtube.
