Amen! Thank you !!! ... ( 1 year ago by stephenTGV)
Amen! Thank you !!!! I also worked with him in 1967-68, and all of the above is 100% true. He is indeed a treasure. He has made the Ravel Concerto his own, (as well as the Beethoven Concerti) setting a golden standard. He has absolutely no competition. He played it for me at the end of my last lesson, before he ever played it in public. (three months before he played it in New York in 1968) A great honor, I have never forgotten.

Leon Fleisher is not handicapped. Nor is his right hand useless anymore. He regained use of it only a few short years ago.

Whew! That's terrific. Outstanding. Thanks again!
I'm still attached to Casadesus' 1960 stereo recording of this, but Fleischer has absolutely nothing to be ashamed of in his masterful interpretation and technique. I'm thankful for the attention Fleischer paid to the left hand repertoire. His recordings of the Blumenfeld Etude and Godowsky's dizzying fantasy on the Treasure Waltz are standouts.
Sosa's left hand album is good too, including "La Valse" and Bach's Chromatic Fantasy & Fugue.

Well, Fleischer is a great pianist but, for my taste, I prefer the version with Samson François.

I do agree with grupetto, i have never eared any interpretation whiich satisfies me like Samson François's one does.

Nice playing. I have some reservations with the phrasing, in general it's a less intense reading, but more lyrical to make up for it.
But say, does someone find Fleicher's technique a bit funny? His octaves are arched instead of flat and level with the keys. Doesn't this mean he's getting less wrist range to impart into the keys and therefore less power since everything is coming from the arms only? Curious.

Well, all I have to say about this guy's performance is that the fact that he couldn't use his right hand at the time made me understand this piece like I never could before. I cried.

Just a note. When I met Mr. Casadesus in the 1950s, at my piano teacher's house, I kissed both his hands. I figured he would be the only person I would ever meet who was friends with Maurice Ravel. Regretfully, I never heard Mr. Fleisher in person.

Hey, I study under Paul Wyse, a former student of Fleisher, and at first I thought the same thing... BUT, came to realize it is so much better in many different ways, there's more room for the energy to go in, and if you actually sit down and try the difference between a raised forward wrist motion and a flat downwards motion, you can hear the difference, almost making the latter sound like 'dead' sound..
but I guess just ... ( 1 year ago by mcd88sean)
but I guess just answering your question, I actually find that there is more power, because it's not only coming from the arms, it's the whole upper body...

Yeah, I've been playing Debussy's octave etude, and I come to appreciate the use of arched octaves. Helps me get force into octaves on black keys without fear of hitting other notes accidentally with my other fingers. I've also seen other pianists on youtube like lang lang and lisitsa who do the same thing and sound fine, at least technically. I guess nowadays I combine the two depending on what's called for.
