Yup, Key of D on a G cross-harp. But, am I hearing a couple of notes below G???? I hear notes below G in his version of Christine (great!!) - also G harp playing in Key of D. Sounds like a low G harp!!! Is there such a thing?????

As I recall, Big Walter used a lot of these "extended harps" (just like Sonny Boy Williamson in his latter days), with an extra octave in the low or high register. It's possible that he uses a G-harp with an extra octave in the low end.

Hey!I wouldn't tongue slap a bent note, that would sound weird too.Everytime you hear Big Walter play like in this video, boogie woogie stuff, he does the same.Lots of tongue slapping and moving the harp (or the head) from side to side.I wish I could help you in more detail but these things are not easy to describe in writing!Have fun with your harp!

I am really pleased to see 80 comments on Big Walter. It shows that there are still a lot of people who can tell shit from shinola. Walter taught us how to drink cc straight from the bottle and what real harp playing was.

One night, we brought him to the legendary Theresa's and a younger guy was filling in on harp for Jr. Wells. I forget his name. Walter stood up, grabbed the mike and let loose with the sweetest and wildest sounds I've ever heard. It still rings loud. The whole place got on it's feet when he was done, which was really unusual. After a few minutes, Jr. Wells came over and brought the "old man" as he called him, a half pint and said something along the lines of "you did it that time old man".

One time we were riding to a club and I put in a cassete of him playing something and he grabbed an A harp that I had laying in the console and showed me what harp playing was. That harp sounded like him until it fell apart. I still to this day don't know how he did it except to figure that he was born for it. He told me once that the power came right from the lungs. He had me hold his stomach while he played and his diaphram didn't move. It was all coming from his lungs. Try it
