Aretha is Chaka's ... ( 9 months ago by paddeyOmalley)
Aretha is Chaka's vocal mentor and Aretha can definitely do jazz but she's not as refined as Chaka in the jazz department..Chaka's being hailed by the jazz critiques and geniuses alike,as one of the best jazz singer after the era of the great Ella, and also being said that Chaka is the only singer outside jazz that can really improvise in jazz..Ree's interpretation of jazz has a combination of her soulful side but Chaka's interpretation of jazz is strictly jazz refined.
I agree that Aretha ... ( 9 months ago by Emeless)
I agree that Aretha has never been able to hold back the soul thing for too long. That is why she is the Queen of Soul. However, Aretha has had some fine jazz moments. One song that comes to mind is her cover of "Moody's Mood For Love" on her Hey Now Hey album produced by Quincy Jones. Chaka chose Aretha as her mentor in very good taste and for all the right reasons.
Chaka Khan is a ... ( 9 months ago by taddyd1)
Chaka Khan is a volcano of power ,but the furthest thing from refined or Ella that I can imagine. Never has Chaka been considered Jazz by any Jazz critic, maybe the Kool Festival type jazz where there isn't any Jazz singers. Dianne Reeves, Neenna Freelon, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Rachelle Ferelle, and Patti Austin are what you must be thinking of. Chaka's quintuple tracked screaming from the 80s that won her is far from "refined".
Aretha's 1st lp for ... ( 9 months ago by taddyd1)
Aretha's 1st lp for Columbia and other tracks on later Columbia efforts are 1st rate works of jazz produced by THE master jazz producer, John Hammond. Chaka is as far from refined jazz as it gets. She simply doesn't have the improvisational skills required to be anywhre near 1st rate in the jazz field. I've seen her standards show twice and ALL the songs were done the same way both times(finshing each song with those diamond cracking high notes.)
yes, the singers as ... ( 9 months ago by paddeyOmalley)
yes, the singers as mentioned by you are some of the top jazz singers and so is Chaka..Chaka does have the ability to improvise jazz and her unique timbre gives the extra edge and dynamic, something uncommonly heard among typical jazz singers..when Chaka scats she mimics the sound of trumpet real good..theres a few clips of Chaka from the Montreux Jazz that showcased her agility in improvising but its no longer on youtube..im a fan of all abovementioned jazz artist so i know where Chaka stands..
Chaka has always ... ( 9 months ago by paddeyOmalley)
Chaka has always been one of the fav artist to jamm with..jazz giants like Quincy Jones, Joe Henderson, Herbie Hancock, Lenny White, Miles Davis, Corea, Stanley Clarke favors Chaka because she has deep jazz artistry and improvisation skills..Dizzy gave trust to Chaka to vocalize "night in tunisia"..Chaka was invited to the prestigious Montreux jazz almost every year..Chaka is not the classic jazz singer, shes more of a contemporary versatile singer, with plenty of deep jazz artistry within her..
Quincy couldn't ... ( 9 months ago by taddyd1)
Quincy couldn't stand working with Chaka and almost gave up workin with women because of her. On a legendary Ellington Tribute Spectacular, Ms Franklin was featured over Peggy Lee, Sarah Vaughan and Roberta Flack.
Chaka's first jazz foray on Electra was very ameteur. She's great at soul/rock but doesn't fit into jazz well. I love Linda Ronstadt but her jazz sides are soo bad. Natalie can't either, nor Etta. Now Marlena Shaw YES! Aretha, the ARTISTE deluxe, makes jazz her own way, Naturally.
even tho this is a ... ( 9 months ago by paddeyOmalley)
even tho this is a matter of opinion, Chaka has the chops for jazz..shes a natural too..jazz giants wouldn't work with her very frequently if shes an average..i assume that you prefer the more olskool jazz..im not sure about your Quincy story tho but from what i know he loves working with Chaka..Marlene Shaw has the jazz chops but melody wise Chaka is better..Chaka blows clear and precise minor scales/jazz riffs like Ella..she creates new demension to jazz, making it her own way too..
Emeless sorry to ... ( 9 months ago by paddeyOmalley)
Emeless sorry to flood your thread but i just wanna share my opinion..by the way this clip of Aretha is awesome, showcasing the jazzy side of the Queen of Soul Aretha alongside some beautiful pictures of her...Chaka does have great taste in choosing her mentor..Jazz as a whole actually encompasses a wide range of musical styles so each singer is entitled to have their own style..Aretha does swing jazz while Chaka does contemporary..
Aretha Franklin DID ... ( 6 months ago by ceeceex0x)
Aretha Franklin DID NOT Co-Write this song with Clark Terry. He wrote it himself!! I suggest you do the proper research before posting false information.
Natalie isn't ... ( 1 month ago by ZebFAN08)
Natalie isn't terible when it comes to jazz, I like her live jazz stuff. Her rendition of "Lovers" live had a nice jazz feel, but some of her studio work I haven't cared for in the jazz department. Natalie has some nice scats when she performs Mr. Melody, Loves, and some other songs live.
