the word "showmanship" means different things to different folks...show business has changed so much I dont think the word really has much relevance, either way. When Liberace died, another piece of "Old Hollywood" slipped away. Where are the REAL entertainers, who should proudly pick up the baton left by the Liberaces, the Sinatras, the Davis Jrs. the Lola Falanas, the Shirley Basseys and the Tina Turners??..where are they? because this shit I see "out here" now is so "low brow".

He could reach an octave and 1/2 because when he was little he used to pratice 4-5 hours a day. And that was from the age of four. the more you play the bigger your hands get stretched. I could barely reach an octave when I started 6 months on and I could reach and octave and 1/4.

It's from the opera "Pagliacci," by Ruggero Leoncavello; the aria is entitled "Vesta la giubba," made famous by tenors such as Caruso and Pavarotti.

You are absolutely right. I'd like to add Lawrence Welk to the list of great stars. He brought the Old Hollywood style to TV during its golden age. All of those entertainers came from a long gone era when America had so much reason to be optimistic about the future. Today, all we have to look forward to is tyranny, menial servitude, anomie, and dystopia. The U.S. general population is being programmed to receive the hell prepared for it. Kill your TV, question authority, and remember the stars.

JDURR4 He follows the tune with "Send in the clowns". Maybe it's something to do with the Musical "A Little Night Music" by Sondheim.

pronkking and infinitemushroom are wise and astute. We have more 'performers' than a dog has fleas, but where are the entertainers? Those with formidible talent coupled with the ability to establish a connection to their audience? Those who can make you feel better despite your worldly concerns? Most of what I see today is a bunch of clowns whose wealth has made them so detached from the real world that it renders them irrelevant.

A pimple on the ... ( 6 days ago by Dogsledfan)
A pimple on the face of music. Yes, he COULD play, but he figured money was more important than art. Pandering downward to the illiterate masses rather than challenging them. Andrew Lloyd-Webber does the same crass disservice to music with his stage compositions. Whether we was gay or not isn't an issue; he simply bastardized and sacrificed art for popularity. That's what's totally unforgivable. Better had he followed Lennie Bernstein's lead in actually trying to EDUCATE his listeners.
Who are you to make ... ( 6 days ago by Ferrante109)
Who are you to make those judgments? Not only was he a great pianist, he was a showman and the best at that. Not only did he educate his listeners, he inspired them. Many people began piano lessons after hearing him play. He was an art form and money is very important. Do you work for free? What is truly "unforgivable" is that there are people, such as yourself, who are quick to criticize, yet would give anything you have not only to be able to play as he could, but to be as rich as well.

Lee learned at an early age to play, while using lead weights on his fingers. His teacher thought this would help strengthen the muscles in his fingers.

This is one of his signature melodies, and clearly shows how he puts an artists touch to several pieces of music. Liberace, though with his personal life issues, was one of the great entertainers. His flamboyance, matched with his incredible mastery of the piano, was something few could match, even today. So many artists play the notes, Lee played his soul. With a heart of gold and a passion for music, he will be missed.

WOW - can you imagine piano teachers doing that today? LOL the parents would probably scream child abuse. I guess that's why he can play with all those rings on his fingers - doesn't even phase him

And who made you sole arbitor of his motives and the literacy of his audience and besides, what does literacy have to do with musical appreciation anyways? I think you're just jealous in your own priggish way.
