5:35 You have to love that friggin' vulture. Even though this is a Superhero cartoon, they still have that WB effect to the side characters. It was the 40's. That was supposed to be expected in EVERY cartoon.

This was before computer assisted animation. Screw ups were not just frowned upon; you got yourself fired. Not to mention all the characters were drawn using rotoscoping, which means they look human because they were traced off pictures of humans in action.

I would presume that he wasn't punching light but plasma jets shot like bullets from a machine gun.Instead of taking the shot he simply deflected it. I would again presume that the light was a targeting feature like a laser on a rifle while the plasma bursts were the actual 'bullets'. If the did intend it like that then they went into a lot of scientific detail for a 1940's cartoon or maybe its just me imagining it all lol.
