This episode is from the era of the 80's not 2008! A kid in the 80's not a young woman in 2008! Based on her maturity, as a kid, I'm sure AK wasn't trying to impress NO ONE but her parents-I'm sure she didn't care if she looked like a "little boy" to others. If her clothes were girly it wouldn't be a big deal. Plenty of kids and adults rock short hair/afros past and present by choice.
